Shoot the Choir

Written by Steve Milligan on 15th February 2025

I slept for an hour again

To the drone of the prayer from the priest

I’m carrying water for you

In my eyes and the soles of my feet

On the days that it’s me lying down

And you being held up

I’m waiting for whispers of “Amen”

As my eyes shut

[Chorus]

I’ve had no rest for so long

That I’ve split right in two

One of me’s roaming the ward

And the other’s pretending

To sleep next to you

Some days I’m craving the peace of a bullet

To shoot down the choir in my room

They’ll stop singing soon

Prayers for the days to come

Turn to poltergeists jostling the dead

The wants of the days unfulfilled

Sing the sermon of nightly regrets

On the days when the choir keeps me up

Hell’s hymns hold me down

Preaching the good word of worry

That’s wasting my frown

[Chorus]

[Bridge]

The hours that escaped my

Pursuit of a minute of peace

Were used by the choir

To rehearse their ruthless reprise

Til the two of me were too tired

To talk some sense into the priest

[Chorus]
