Father Know’s Best
Written by Steve Milligan on 9th April 2025
I’ve fallen from mountains
Struck down by the weight of my rules
Stones that don’t wilt
But that shatter when handled by fools
All the good that I do
Is an echo of the hymns of the west
I just can’t bear the weight
Round my neck that says Daddy knows Best
I still bow my head in your halls
To see the daylight creeping under your door
Cos if God’s at the end of all this
I’ll make peace with him then
But I’m not prepared to build a life
Around a dead man yet
When I was born to his house
I put the evil on him
Now that I’m paying my way
I see that evil’s within
We swore that he ordered the righteous
Set Salem ablaze
But the faithless are still starting fires
Now he’s not here to blame
There’s a dark cloud above every herd
Whether wild or fenced in by the word
So if God’s at the end of all this
I’ll make peace with him then
But I’m not prepared to build a life
Around a dead man yet
I won’t preach that I know the way
And I’ve been lost more times than I’ve been saved
But if God’s at the end of all this
I’ll make peace with him then
Cause I’m not prepared to build a life
Around a dead man yet.
